7 STEP GUIDE FOR AIEEE ONLINE CHOICE FILLING

AIEEE-2011 has been in stark contrast to all its previous versions. It was more dramatic and animated and surprised many with unbelievable developments. Not to forget the infamous paper leak and then inevitable subsequent delay in the announcement of results. The counselling this time is also expected to follow the suit. There have been some positive and much needed changes in the 2011 edition of central counseling board.

 

AIEEE-2011 Different from 2010

CBSE has introduced 3 rounds of choice filling. The first round of choice filling ends on 23^rd June. Subsequently there would be three rounds of seat allotment. All those who wouldn't be allotted any seat and those who would surrender their seats would be eligible for fresh choice filling (July 14-17). The third and final choice filling(July18-22) can be done prior to fifth round of seat allotment. The most distinguishing features that AIEEE-2011 has is SPOT ROUND.

Last year CBSE conducted 7 rounds of counselling, still most of the NITs  ,except the priviledged few, could not draw considerable crowd. SPOT counselling would ensure more transparency in the process,lesser vacant seats in NITs and also higher cut-offs.

TIPS FOR CHOICE FILLING

STEP 1

First of all you should demarcate all the colleges that you can take admission into. Categorize  all the participating institutions into a list of three

(i)Dream Colleges

(ii)Comfortable

(iii)Not at all

Dream College would be those, in which you would like to get into anyway. All colleges which may not be your first preference but you would not mind getting into them would fall into ‘comfortable’ list. And colleges which you would never join whatsoever branch you get should fall under ‘Not at all’ list. 


This list may vary from person to person and should strictly be based on one’s AIR. For instance: SVNIT Surat may be Dream College for one while other might not  consider it at all.

STEP 2

On the same lines Categorizes all the branch available into a list three

(i)Dream Branch

(ii)Comfortable Branch

(iii)Not at all

Note: It is strongly advisable that your ‘Not at all’ list should be as small as possible. Because it reduces your chances. 
The entire list need not be put on paper.

STEP 3

Look out for colleges and branches that you are most likely to get as per your rank  based on previous year’s cutoffs. Focus more on them and make sure that they are placed properly in your list. But cut-off is  not the only criteria. For ex- NIT Silchar has a higher cut-off than Thapar University. But that doesn’t imply that former is better.

Prefer core branches like Mechanical over relatively newer branches like Mechtronics because core branches are evergreen.

STEP 4

There are two most popular approach to choice filling-

                a)College Centric Approach

                b)Branch Centric Approach

a)There are students who are particular about a branch say Computer Science irrespective of College they get. So they are advised to fill choices is following manner-

1)NIT Warrangal-               Computer Science

2)NIT Tirchy-                     Computer Science

3)NIT Suratkal -                 Computer Science

4) NIT Calicut -                  Computer Science

At this point of time you should realize that Electronics in NIT W(say) is better than taking CS in MNIT Allahabad.

So you should then again repeat the same colleges

5)NIT Warrangal-         Electronics

6)NIT Tirchy-                Electronics

.

.

.

So the point is, you should group similar colleges together and make sure that you don’t compromise with college too much. Because in the end it is the college that matters most in placements.

b)College Centric Approach

There are students who are more concerned about getting into a good college than getting any particular branch. There choice preference can be

1)NIT Warrangal-            Computer Science

2)NIT Warrangal             Electronics & Communication

3)NIT Warrangal-            Mechanical

At this point of time, Student Should realize that it would be better to opt for CS in other college than to go  for civil(say) in NIT Warrangal.

So you should continue as

4)NIT Tirchy-            Computer Science

5)NIT Tirchy             Electronics & Communication

At this point of time, its important to discuss these points

i)All branches are equal. There is a common myth that Computer Science is better than Mechanical(say). It all depends on personal inclination.  If a person who is inclined towards mechanical designs opts for computer Science just under peer pressure, he might repent his decision for ever.

ii) Both Branch and College Centric approach are equally effective. There is no hard and fast rule as such. Most of the time we use both the approach together. The basic objective should be to strike a balance between branch and college.

STEP5

You should have your final college list ready well before the last date so that you can make changes as per the indicative seats shown from time to time. This is the most crucial part. Most student procrastinate and exercise choice filling in the eleventh hour. one may commit blunders in hurry and then repent later on.

So fill your tentative choices at the earliest and keep modifying as per the indicative seat matrix shown by CCB fro time to time.

NOTE: It’s not important that you get a seat in first counseling. But make sure that you don’t get a college that you don’t want at all.

Positively lock your choices by the deadline. It’s really disheartening to know that many students become ineligible just because they could not lock their choices in time.

STEP-6

The major dilemma arises over  whether to participate in further rounds or to freeze your choice, once you are allotted any college. If you have filled your choices properly, participating in furtur rounds won't be a tough call. you would always get a higher preferred college in subsequent rounds.

But this golden rule is not applicable  for round 4 and round 5. Because of fresh choice filling, you may even get a worse college. Remember that once you surrender your seat, you lose your claim over that seat.

STEP 7

Introduction of SPOT Round is the most dramatic changes introduced by  CCB. One or more SPOT rounds may be conducted depending on the vacancy available. But the most important point is that SPOT Rounds would occur after internal sliding in each colleges. So don’t expect any good branch to be available in spot counselling. Therefore, it won’t be a wise decision to wait for SPOT rounds.

BRANCH VERSUS COLLEGE

Don’t follow the crowd. Pursue your passion. Students generally have craze for computer science or electronics, but what one needs to realize is that the branch one chooses would become one’s profession and would remain for life-time. So select your branch judiciously, follow your instincts. No branch is good or bad. Every branch has infinite opportunities and possibilities. If a person who is inclined towards mechanical designs opts for computer Science just under peer pressure, he might repent his decision for ever.

Every branch has its own pros and cons. Electrical, Civil and Mechanical engineering are core branches and are evergreen. Computer Science and Electronics has seen a huge boom in the recent years. Biotechnology, aerospace and industrial engineering have incredible demand abroad. So the point which we want to drive home is, if you are a good engineer, no matter whatever branch you may belong to, you would be placed at par with anyone.

Generally during counseling, we are in dilemma whether to go to our dream college or to pursue our dream course. Ofcourse if one gets both together, one can’t ask for anything better. But that is not the case always. In such situations many students compromise with branch and opt for a good college or vice-versa. AIEEENOW recommends you to be flexible in your approach. Try to get the branch of your choice in a reputed college. Always give preference to your branch but make sure that you don’t compromise with the college too much. In the end, it’s the reputation of the college that makes your degree worthy.

AIEEE PAPER LEAK-DRAMA WITHIN AND BEYOND

CBSE has become the stage for high voltage drama once again.

Firstly, the paper was rescheduled from 28th April to 1st May. Then on the  eve of this mega event the AIEEE papers were found in the open market at Kanpur, exchanging hands at an incredible price of 6 lakh. Once it was established that this was the real paper, CBSE went into damage control mode. Exam was conducted on 1st of may  and those who missed out the exam due to AFMC were allowed to sit for AIEEE on 11th may.  The fact that it ensured re-examination within 2 hours of the incident is praise worthy. But it doesn't wash away the cardinal sin that it committed-the sin of playing with the future of 12 lakh students.

There are many questions that need to be answered now. How would CBSE maintain parity between scores and rank between the two exams. Some may argue that online test format as adopted by BITS has different set of questions for all candidates. But there is a difference here. In this case there were two distinct set of questions for two different group of students. Its a matter of fate for who turns out to be the privileged one. For sure the question paper that came on 11th couldn't be similar to the one on 1st. Those who took test on 11th got extra time and hence extra advantage over lakhs of students who took test after spending hours standing in scorching sun in the grip of uncertainity.




To add fuel to the fire, AIEEE official website had no information regarding the paper leak or rescheduling. Ofcource, every-one would have reverted back to the web-site to get the authentic news. It is a matter of shame that news channels like aaj-tak etc proved to be faster than CBSE to convey the news to us. It was only after a day or two that CBSE felt the need to update the 'news'. When you are not afraid committing a crime, why be shameful in publishing it?

I was myself a AIEEE aspirant in 2009 and I personally believe that these things must have existed since long.
Remember it was not the first time that AIEEE papers were sold, it was the first time they were caught. At this point of time I am compelled to believe that I could have secured a better rank and landed  into a better college. This incident shows that corruption is deep rooted in CBSE and needs quick redreesal. These things can't happen without the consensus of top-brass at CBSE. Question papers are highly secured documents and limited people have open access to it. So there are some bigger fishes roaming scot free and need to be brought to book.

RAGGING-NOW AND THEN……..

Dear All,

When I joined my college 4 years back, first question my parents inquired about, whenever I called back home was regarding ragging. Not only me but my entire family was stressed out due to the daemon called ragging. We were treated as if we were the least wanted species on earth. We were made to do everything that as human we were not supposed to do. In the garb of introducing us to college life, our seniors made our life hellish. We had to make class notes for seniors, take their cloths to laundry and complete their lab manuals etc. Some amongst us dared to complaint to authorities, but hardly any action was taken.

But there was a silver lining in this gloomy picture. By the end of first semester we all were bound into a family. We would get all the books and notes from our seniors. They cared about us like our elder brother. The best part was your ‘boss’ (this is what we called our seniors) would never let you pay for anything. Suppose you were in the college canteen and your boss happened to come there, then he would have to pay for whatever you eat. So this was the price that seniors had to pay for entire four years.

But every junior didn’t have such a happy ending to his story. Many like Durgesh Shukla, Chetan Raj, S. P. Manoj lost their life or were forced to commit suicide due to ragging menace. Finally impelled by Aman Kachroo's death, University Grants Commission (UGC) framed UGC Regulations on curbing the menace ofragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009, in order to prohibit, prevent and eliminate the scourge of ragging in Indian Universities. This has made ragging a criminal Offence.

In addition, Apex court has issued following directives to be implemented without any further lapse of time
(1)The   punishment   to   be   meted   out   has   to   be   exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents.
(2)  Every   single   incident   of  ragging where   the   victim   or his parent/guardian   or   the   Head   of   institution   is   not   satisfied   with  the institutional arrangement for action, a First Information Report (FIR) must be filed without exception by the institutional authorities with the local police authorities. Any   failure   on   the   part   of   the   institutional   authority   or negligence or deliberate delay in lodging the FIRwith the local police shall be   construed   to   be   an   act   of   culpable   negligence   on   the   part   of   the institutional   authority.  If   any   victim   or   his   parent/guardian   of  ragging intends   to   file   FIR   directly   with   the   police,   that   will   not   absolve   the institutional authority from the requirement of filing the FIR.
(3) Courts   should   make   an   effort   to   ensure   that   cases   involving ragging are taken up on  a priority basis to send the correct messagethat ragging is not only to be discourages but also to be dealt with sternness.
(4) In   addition,   the court directed the   possibility   of   introducing   in   the educational   curriculum   a   subject   relating   to   ragging shall   beexplored   by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the   respective   State   Council   of   Educational  Research   and   Training (SCERT).     This   aspect   can   be   included   in   the   teaching   of   the   subjects "Human Rights".
(5)  In the prospectus   to   be   issued   for   admission   by   educational institutions,   it   shall   be   clearly   stipulated   that   in   case   the   applicant  for admission is found to have indulged in ragging in the past or

if it is noticed later that he has indulged in ragging, admission may be refused or he shallbe expelled from the educational institution.
(6) The Central Government and the State Governments shall launch a programme   giving   wide   publicity   to   the   menace   of   ragging and   theconsequences   which   follow   in   case   any   student   is   detected   to   have   been involved in ragging.
(7) It   shall   be   the   collective   responsibility   of   the   authorities   and functionaries of the concerned institution and their role shall also be open toscrutiny for the purpose of finding out whether they have taken effective steps   for   preventing   ragging and   in   case   of   their   failure,   action  can   be taken; for example, denial of any grant-in-aid or assistance from the State Governments.
(8) Anti-ragging committees and squads shall be forthwith formed by the institutions and   it shall be   the job   of   the   committee or   the squad, as thecase   may   be,   to   see   that   the   Committee's   recommendations, particularly those noted above, are observed without exception and if it isnoticed that there is any deviation, the same shall be forthwith brought to the notice of this court.
(9) The   Committee   constituted   pursuant   to   the   order   of   this  Court shall   continue   to   monitor   the   functioning   of   the   anti-ragging committees and the squads to be formed.  They shall also monitor the implementation of the recommendations to which reference has been made above.


These steps have drastically reduced the ragging. Many colleges have been successful in establishing ‘zero ragging campus’.There have been two severe impacts of Anti-ragging act by UGC-
1) Most students don’t dare to promote or encourage ragging activities due to heavy penalties and punishment that they may invite if they are caught.2) College has no option but to take stern steps if any genuine ragging incident is reported by any student. This is a good news for all parents and children who are too tensed in apprehension of ragging. With UGS empowering you with Anti ragging act, you may not be ragged at all.
